The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) enhanced rider scheme checks your motorcycle riding skills and provides training to help you improve.

There is no test.

ERS is delivered by accredited trainers who have passed rigorous training and met the highest standards of instruction before joining the "RPMT."

You can get discounts on motorcycle insurance once you’ve successfully completed the scheme.

You can take the enhanced rider scheme if you’re a fully licensed motorcyclist and have passed your test.

How the scheme works.  

You’ll first have a rider assessment with an expert trainer. The topics covered are

discussing key risk areas in on-road riding such as negotiating bends, overtaking, filtering, positioning at junctions, defensive riding, hazard awareness, progress, use of speed, overtaking, slip roads and filtering.

Firstly we would assess your riding abilities off road.

This will incorporate

slow control, figure of 8, U Turns, controlled braking and emergency stops.

You might want to bring up any areas that you’re particularly keen to focus on like carrying a pillion or riding abroad

You’ll ride in different road and traffic conditions.

The ride will be long enough for your trainer to make a good assessment of your skills. For most people this is minimum 3 hours.

 If your trainer identifies you don’t need any more training you’ll recieve a "DVSA" certificate of competence straight away.

Otherwise you’ll get a personalised training plan and your trainer will identify specific areas needing attention. Rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach your individual training plan ensures you  Improve your own personal skills to acheive your targets and gain your certification.

The type of training depends on what you need to brush up on. You might be offered all-day courses or shorter sessions.

The cost of the DVSA enhanced rider scheme is £25 per hour minimum 3 hours
